Authors’ Biographies

I recently graduated with a Communication Studies and Psychology double major with a concentration in Public Relations. I was born and raised in Three Bridges, NJ and I plan to head back up to the tri-state area upon graduation. I hope to one day work at a firm in New York City.

One of my top priorities from the past four years had been my involvement at JMU. I was a proud member of Student Ambassadors, a service organization that helps past, present and future Dukes. I was the publicity chair for Relay For Life and the treasurer for Lambda Pi Eta, the national communication honors society. I was also a member of JMU’s chapter of Public Relations Student Society of America. I was part of The Nicaragua Project, a group of people going on a service trip to Nicaragua over spring break. We built a school and a house, and also taught lessons on hygiene.

Last summer I worked as an account executive intern for The Campus Special, a company that creates and distributes discount books to college students. I had the opportunity to work with over 50 clients in advertising, sales and marketing. My partner and I created the first edition of the Harrisonburg book.

I am happy to be working with three wonderful young women while creating this blog. I hope that our contributions help other females trying to launch their careers. Feel free to contact me via Email at, on twitter (atoolan23) or find me on Facebook (Allyson Toolan).

I am a recent graduate with a Media Arts & Design and Communications double major, concentrating in Corporate Communications and Public Relations. My hometown is Richmond, VA but I am looking to relocate to Washington, DC or New York City after graduation.

I have had the opportunity to dabble in many areas of campus life at James Madison, including serving as the Freshman Class Secretary, Vice President of Membership for Student Ambassadors, and Vice President of Finance for the Delta Delta Delta sisterhood. I have also traveled on an Alternative Spring Break trip, served on the Homecoming committee, and been a Relay for Life team captain.

For the past two summers, I have held internship positions in communications agencies. The first was at a creative consultancy in Richmond, VA called Play. Here I had the opportunity to work with Fortune 500 companies to improve branding strategies and employee communication. I also researched and helped author a position paper on how to communicate to the Millenial Generation. This past summer, I interned with J. Walter Thompson, an advertising agency in NYC. I worked on the Diageo account, in the Account Management department.

I am looking forward to the opportunity to contribute to this blog because I am passionate about sharing resources with fellow women to help them launch their careers. I hope it will be a helpful guide. Feel free to contact me at, follow me on Twitter (heathercote) or find me on Facebook or LinkedIn.
