Jane of All Trades

080314-young-woman-reading-newspaperIn today’s world, it has become increasingly important to stay abreast of what’s going on in the world around us. Staying informed is not only helpful when carrying on day-to-day conversations with friends and colleagues, but also when preparing to enter the real world. Employers are looking for intuitive candidates who are aware of current trends across the board, and can sense how these trends will be affecting their industry.

Stay informed by at least skimming the headlines of various sections of an online newspaper. Subscribe to a news podcast and listen to it while you’re at the gym. Set an unbiased source as your Internet browser’s homepage. Resist watching that Real Housewives of Orange County episode for the fifth time and tune into the local news. These are all opportunities to learn about current events, and possibly gather tips on how to make yourself more marketable to potential employers. You may be surprised at how smart you feel and sound after just a few weeks of intentional learning.

To aid in the process, check out The New York Times article skimmer that allows you to browse headlines in all topics. Even the busiest of ladies can make the time to stay well-informed.
